Court Sentences Syrian Activist

DAMASCUS , Syria (AP) -- A Syrian court on Tuesday convicted prominent human rights activist Anwar al-Bunni of disseminating hostile information and sentenced him to five years in jail, a defense lawyer said.

The heavy sentence sends a strong warning to other government opponents, and shows that Syria has turned its back on U.S. and European Union pressure for reform.

Al-Bunni, who has been detained nearly 12 months, was convicted of spreading false or exaggerated news that could weaken national morale, affiliating with an unlicensed political association with an international nature, discrediting state institutions and contacting a foreign country.

In addition to the prison sentence, the court ordered al-Bunni, a lawyer, to pay $2,000, said a member of the defense team, Khalil Maatouk.

There was no immediate word from the Syrian authorities who usually do not comment on cases deemed political or matters of national security.

Attorney Khalil Maatouk said he will appeal the ruling within 30 days.

The charges stemmed from al-Bunni's work as a human rights activist.

He is the first of three leading activists to be convicted after spending about a year in detention.

Maatouk said the trial was politically motivated and ''a flagrant violation of freedom of opinion and expression, and an attempt to intimidate Syrian society.''

''The ruling violates the law and has no legal basis,'' Maatouk told The Associated Press.

He added that he hoped the Appeal Court judges would be independent and would consider the matter impartially.
