In 2000, a fresh-faced Bashar al-Assad was elected to the Syrian presidency with a resounding 99.7 per cent of the vote. This was a level of popular acclaim only a little shy of Saddam Hussein’s presidential referendum of 1995 and election of 2002 (both 100 per cent), but it outstripped leaders like Cuba’s Castros (99.4 per cent) and Egypt’s Hosni Mubarak (a paltry 88.6 per cent). Assad naturally repeated the trick in 2007.
