كان قادة الحركة النسوية للموجة الأولى  قادة عمال كادحين يطالبون بحق المرأة في الاقتراع ، و سعوا لتحقيق الأمان للأم و الطفل في سوق العمل. فكان الرجال و النساء و الأطفال قبل أن يحققوا أهدافهم يعملون حتى الموت في معظم المصانع.

لقد أيقنت الموجة الأولى – بما فيهم الأم جونز التي لا يقدرها قادة الحركة النسوية- أن استهداف كل أشكال الظلم في العمل لن يكون موطئ قدم يوفر الحماية الكافية للجميع من الظلم الكبير في القرن التاسع عشر و العشرين.

لقد قرروا أن يخطوا خطوة خطوة. فعملوا بجد للحصول على قوانين تحمي النساء و الأطفال. أرادت الأم جونز أن تساعد الجميع – وكانت صبورة- فهي تعرف أن عليك أن تكسب معارك صغيرة في سبيل الفوز في الحرب الكبرى.

و كان مود يونغر مدافعاً آخر عن شيوعية التجارة و إيجاد أسس لتحسين ظروف النساء العاملات- و الرجال العاملين. فهو يرى أنه حين يظلم أي رجل أو امرأة نظلم نحن.

نعم، غدت بعض هذه القوانين ضارة- لكن ما كان يحدث قبل هذا أسوأ بكثير.

فلنقرأ أي تاريخ سابق لقوانين الأمان لطواحين تكستايل. فنرى محرقة مصنع شيرت ويست الشهيرة. و غيرها من أشكال الظلم الوحشي.

آمن قادة الموجة الأولى من الحركة النسوية أن الخطوة التالية هي حماية الرجال أيضاً. لكن الموجة الثانية لم تهتم بهذا. فلننظر إلى أول قادة للحركة النسوية الثانية، كانوا كلهم من مدللي الأغنياء – مثل صديقة متحررة لي عاصرتهم و تشعر بالازدراء تجاههم. و تابعت نضالهم عن قرب .

فبدلاً من البحث عن مكان عمل ودولة إنسانيين، قرروا شراء النقابة التي كانت أمهاتهم تحاربها. قرر أولئك الأغنياء المدللون أن وظائفهم " المتعجرفة" ستكون أهم من العدالة ذاتها. العدالة الحقيقية لمعظم النساء اللواتي لم يُعطين خياراً لترك العمل و البقاء في المنزل. مما أدى إلى فشل عظيم اقتصادياً و اجتماعياً للجميع- الرجال و النساء و الأطفال.

كان يقود الموجة الثانية من الحركة النسوية الأغنياء. فلم يستغرقوا وقتاً للتفكير في حياة النساء الحقيقيات اللواتي عملن في الأعمال السهلة و غيرها التي تحتاج جهداً كبيراً. و هذا جزء كبير من المشاكل التي سببوها.

تمكنوا من جمع القوى لإقناع جميع الطبقات الاجتماعية و الاقتصادية – باستثناء الطبقة فاحشة الثراء – بضرورة عمل الزوجين، و كان هذا تراثهم.

قد يلقي الكثيرون باللوم على الموجة الثانية في إصدار قانون رو ويد – الذي يبيح الإجهاض بشروط- إلا أن هذا غير صحيح. بل أسست الموجة الأولى لهذا القانون فدعت إلى التحرر الجنسي في الثلاثينيات – بما في ذلك المظاهرات الجماهيرية لصالح استخدام الواقي الذكري. لقد عملت الموجة الأولى بجد لتسهيل الإجهاض للجميع. و لسوء الحظ، تورطت في فضائح عصرهم حول تحسين النسل. حاربت مارجريت سانجر أحد قادة الحقوق الإنجابية و التي تروج لتحسين النسل البشري و فيكتوريا كلافلين وودهول ( من أوائل الداعين إلى حرية الحب)- بجد ضد القوانين التي تمنع تحديد النسل. كما دعمت بعض النساء دراسة طرق أخرى لتحديد النسل و منع الإنجاب.

لذا ما هو إرث الموجة الثانية من الحركة النسوية؟ و ماذا عن تضخم متطلبات العمل المؤدي إلى الكثير من الديون المتراكمة؟

لسبب ما قرر الناس الاقتناع بفكرة حاجة كل الأعمال إلى شهادة جامعية- بغض النظر عن بساطة هذا العمل. هذا خطأ. فمعظم الأعمال التي" تتطلب" شهادة لا تحتاجها في الواقع.

آمنت الموجة الثانية بأن رفع معدلات التعليم بين النساء سيرفع من أجورهن، و لم ينتبهن إلى التاريخ. فكانت النساء تحصل على شهادات علمية في القرن التاسع عشر أكثر من الرجال حتى وضعت الجامعات حداً أقصى للنساء الملتحقات بالدراسة. نعم، كانت الحدود القصوى ظالمةً، لكنها أظهرت أن تعلم النساء لم يجلب لهن رواتب أعلى. بل في الواقع سبب توفر أعداد أكبر من العاملين-  من الرجال و النساء المؤهلين- تراجع الأجور. و أقول إن قوانين العرض و الطلب حقيقية و مقنعة.

لذلك، نرى قادة الموجة الثانية من الحركة النسوية مساهمين أساسيين في تراجع الرواتب في سوق العمل. أعرف أنهم لا يرغبون في سماع هذا، لكنه صحيح. لقد دخلوا في القوى المؤثرة اقتصادياً.

كما خدعت الموجة الثانية جيلاً بأكمله من الشابات بتعليمهن أن الوظيفة أهم من العائلة. و أقنعت الرجال بضرورة عمل زوجاتهن إضافة إلى الاعتناء بالمنزل. بات عدم العمل و البقاء في المنزل للعناية بالأطفال يعني الكسل. و لا يهم ما هو جنسك وفقاً للموجة الثانية. لم تتمكن بيتي فريدان من إخفاء ازدرائها لمن تفضل البقاء في المنزل.

لقد أعطوا الرجال والنساء – مهما حاولوا إنكار الأمر- معلومات خاطئة عن الخصوبة و استمراريتها. فهل تدرك أن الأغلبية الساحقة لنجوم و مراسلي لوس أنجلوس و نيويورك ينجبون توائم من البنات و الأولاد في أواخر الأربعينيات و الخمسينيات باستئجار الأرحام؟ قد لا يستأجر 1% منهم أرحاماً .

أحترم الموجة الثالثة للحركة النسوية لأنها تمثل عودة للجذور التي أسسها الكادحون – المساواة تحت القانون للجميع. كما أنهم يؤمنون بمبدأ الصالح العام الذي ضاع منذ تولى أعداء الأطفال القوة. لم يفكر جيل "الأنا" قبل القيام بما قام به. كما أنه لم يعد التفكير فيه – كما نرى فيما خلف من فوضى كبيرة. ( نعم، هناك استثناءات، لكن نراهم ديمغرافياً الأكثر أنانية و تكبراً على الإطلاق.)

أتمنى أن تخرجنا الموجة الثالثة من عبودية الديون التي أوجدتها الموجة الثانية.

و يعد الطلاق غير الخاطئ أحد أسوأ الأمور التي دعت إليها الموجة الثانية من الحركة النسوية، مودياً بالكثير من النساء و الأطفال إلى الفقر. إن الزواج التزام جدي فينبغي أن يكون هناك سبب وراء أي طلاق. لا، لا تنجح كل الزيجات، لكن لا يجوز أن يقرر شخص واحد ضرورة الطلاق دون إعطاء الآخر الأسباب. لقد رأيت أصدقاء مضطهدين بهذا " الشيء الجيد" غدوا معدمين على الرغم من وضع شريكهم السابق الجيد. قد يناقش البعض في أن الزواج غير الخاطئ عبارة عن " طلاق بموافقة متبادلة". هناك قصة عن مُشرّع في ميتشيغان في الثمانينيات أقنع القضاة بالإقرار على الطلاق غير الخاطئ حتى يتمكن من تطليق زوجته إن رفضت ذلك. هذه القصة حقيقية. لقد أعطت الموجة الثانية الرجال أعذاراً للتملص من مسؤولياتهم.

لكم الحق في معارضتي. لكنني أرى الموجة الثانية خليطاً من الأغنياء المملين الأوغاد الذين لم يهتموا بواقع النساء العاملات- عوضاً عن الرجال و الأطفال. بل اهتموا بعالمهم ضيق الأفق- لا بالمجتمع أجمع.

Why Second Wave Feminism Betrayed Women – and Men

PJ, at Coming2Terms had a post awhile back about the blaming of feminism for fertility problems. Well, I don’t blame it on First or Third Wavers, but the Second Wavers have plenty of blame to own that issue, and others, in my opinion. Her post led to several discussions with people I respect about the Second Wave Feminist Movement, this is a synopsis of what we (and, mostly, I, think of the Second Wave.)

First wave feminists included the suffragettes and early labor leaders who worked for child and women’s safety in the workplace. Prior to their work in the field, men, women, and children were literally worked to death in most factories.

First wave feminists – including the under appreciated Mother Jones (at least among feminists) – knew that targeting all of the injustices of labor would never gain them a foothold into the need to protect everyone from the grand injustices that had come about due to the Robber Baron culture of the late 19th and early 20th century. They decided to take it one step at a time. They worked tirelessly to get rules in place to at least protect women and children. Mother Jones wanted to help everybody – and had a temper – but even she knew that you had to build your battles into winning a war.

Maud Younger was also an advocate for trade unionism and creating building blocks to better the situation for working women – and working men. When any man or woman is oppressed we are all oppressed.

Yes, some of these rules became great detriments – but what had been happening before was much, much worse.

Read any history of the Textile Mills prior to those safety regulations. Anyone remember the shirtwaist fire from history class? That was just one of many atrocities.

The first wave feminists and labor leaders believed that the next step was to protect men as well. The second wave would have none of that. Look at who made up the leadership of the second wave feminists? They were all rich, spoiled brats – to paraphrase a non-traditional female friend of mine who was their contemporary. She has nothing but disdain for them. And she saw the struggles up-close and personal in her own life.

Instead of looking to create a humane workplace and country for everyone, they decided to buy into the corporatism that their foremothers had been fighting. These spoiled, rich brats decided that their “high-falutin” career would be more important than justice. Real justice for all the women who never had the option of stopping work and staying home. The vast majority of women in reality. This led to a massive failure both economically and socially for everyone – men, women, and children.

The second wave feminists were dominated by the rich. Period. They did not take time to consider the lives of real women who, for the most part, worked either blue collar or pink collar jobs. This is a large part of the backlash against them. Somehow, they manged to help the corporate powers to make it necessary for every socioeconomic class – except the uber-rich – to have both spouses working to survive. That is their real legacy.

Many will say they are responsible for Roe v. Wade. I don’t agree. The groundwork for Roe v. Wade was laid by the First Wave Feminists who had experimented with sexual liberation in the 1920s – including massive in-roads towards the acceptance of the use of condoms. The First Wavers knew abortion first hand and had been quietly working all along to make it accessible to everyone who needed it. Unfortunately, they also got caught up with the eugenics scandals of the same era. Margaret Sanger, one of the most visible women in reproductive rights, was an unapologetic eugenicist. There were other diverse characters – Kitty Marion and Victoria Claflin Woodhull (early free love advocate?) – who were working fervently fighting against laws restricting birth control. Some of these women even supported research into both birth control and infertility.

So, what else is the legacy of the Second Wave? How about inflation of job requirements leading to lifetime debt accumulation. For some reason, people decided to buy into the idea that every job needs a college education – no matter how simple the job may be. This is simply false. Most jobs that “require” a degree don’t need one.

The Second Wavers believed that rising education levels among women would elevate their pay. They weren’t paying attention to history. Women in the late 19th century were acquiring more degrees than men until universities put caps on women’s enrollment. Now, yes, the caps were discriminatory, but it had already shown that just because women had education it did not mean salaries would rise. In reality, because there was more of a supply of workers – now both men and women were qualified – it depressed wages. I’m afraid the laws of supply and demand are very real.

So, feminists of the second wave are very much a contributor to the depression of wages in the workforce. I know they don’t like to hear it, but it is true. They played right into the hands of the powers-that-be in business.

Second Wave Feminism also betrayed an entire generation of young women by teaching them career was more important than family. They did the same to the young men who now believe that their wives must work as well as take care of a house. To not work and stay home to take care of the kids is to be a slacker. It doesn’t matter your gender, but that is what the Second Wave taught and believed. Betty Friedan has never made a secret of her utter disdain for those who choose domesticity.

They did – no matter how much they want to deny it – give men and women false information about fertility and how long it lasts. You do realize that the vast majority of those starlets and reporters in LA and New York having boy / girl twins in their late 40s to early 50s are using donor gametes? There might be 1% who are not.

I respect Third Wave Feminism because it is a return to the roots of what the Suffragettes were really about – equality under the law for all. They also believed in this weird concept called The Common Good that has been utterly lost since the Baby Boomers gained power. The Me Generation really didn’t think before doing what they did. They still don’t – as is evidenced in the utter mess they have left us. (Yes, there are exceptions, but, demographically, they are the most self-centered and spoiled little brats ever.)

I hope that Third Wave Feminism works to bring us out of the debt slavery that the Second Wave Feminists helped create.

No-Fault divorce is one of the worst things that Second Wave Feminism advocated. Ultimately, it has led to more women and children in poverty. Really, marriage is a very serious commitment and there should be a reason required for a divorce. No, not all marriages are going survive, but it should not be ok for just one person to get to decide on a divorce when the other party does not grant it without a damn good reason. I’ve seen friends who were victimized by this “good thing” and who are now destitute despite their ex-partner’s status. Some will argue that no-fault divorces are “mutual consent” divorces. In many states, only one party has to file for a “no-fault” divorce. There is a story of a Michigan legislator in the 1970s who got his buddies to finally pass “no-fault” divorce here so he could leave his wife high and dry when she would not grant him a divorce. The story is real. Second Wavers gave men excuses to not live up to their responsibilities.

You are, of course, free to disagree. But, from where I’m standing, Second Wave Feminism was a concoction of bored, rich bitches who didn’t give a damn about the reality of real working women – let alone men or children. They cared about their own insular, little world – not society in general
