When Barack Obama and Mitt Romney squared off in their second debate last week, the view from Beijing was not of a boxing match but "a vanity fair for China-bashers competing to flex their muscles", snapped a commentary for state news agency Xinhua.

"We hope the US Republican and Democratic candidates will get rid of the impact of election politics and do more things conducive to China-US mutual trust and cooperation," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei told reporters

Ali Ferzat: The pen fighting Assad's sword

علي فرزات : القلم لمحاربة سيف الأسد

Ali Ferzat is Syria 's most renowned cartoonist. His work has become an iconic feature of the Syrian revolutionary movement; his cynical caricatures of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad and Arab dictators have mocked repression and corruption all over the Middle East , and Arab Spring street protesters have held up his work in their fight for freedom.

The cartoonist was forced to leave Syria after he was assaulted by masked gunmen on his way home from his former studio in Damascus in August last year.

Syria : car bomb kills 10 in Christian quarter of Damascus

Up to 10 people were killed and 15 wounded as the charge detonated at the historical gate of Bab Touma, a busy pick up point for taxis and buses.

“The bomb exploded as people were moving to go to Churches for Sunday mass. It exploded just outside the police station. There was a bus stop right beside it,” said a resident calling himself George who works in a hotel just a few streets away from the explosion. “I felt the explosion. The ground beneath me shook and I can see black smoke rising from the area.

The funeral in Beirut yesterday of Brigadier General Wissam al-Hassan and the violent anti-government protest which followed were reminders of Syria ’s enduringly pernicious influence on Lebanese affairs. Investigations by the head of internal security, who was assassinated on Friday, had led to the arrest in August of Michel Samaha, a pro-Syrian former information minister, on charges of plotting a bomb attack in the north of the country.

Seven die in Lebanon as army warns politicians

Army commanders urged party leaders to be cautious in their public statements so as not to inflame passions further.

It issued the warning after troops and gunmen exchanged fire in Beirut 's southern suburbs overnight and on Monday morning while protesters blocked roads with burning tyres.

Syrian rebels demand Assad suspends military flights for Eid ceasefire

المتمردون السوريون يطلبون من الأسد وقف الحرب الجوية ووقف إطلاق النار في العيد

Louay al-Mokdad, a co-ordinator for the Free Syrian Army in Turkey , said representatives were talking to the UN envoy, Lakhdar al-Brahimi, about his call for a temporary truce at the end of the week.

But he said he doubted Mr Brahimi would have the means to enforce any agreement. He said the rebels wanted a commitment that the regime would not use the ceasefire to regroup troops, as well as that it would stop air raids and release women prisoners.
