المعارضة تحظى بالاعتراف الكامل من أصدقاء سوريا

Meeting in the Moroccan city of Marrakesh as rebels battled Bashar al-Assad's troops on the outskirts of his Damascus power base, the "Friends of Syria" group called on the president to step aside and warned him against using chemical weapons.

Barack Obama recognises Syrian opposition

باراك أوباما يعترف بالمعارضة السورية 

The US President said that Syria's Opposition Council had become "inclusive enough" to be formally recognised as its true leadership, even while warning some rebels remained anti-US jihadists.

"At this point we have a well-organised enough coalition - opposition coalition that is representative - that we can recognise them as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people," Mr Obama told ABC.

Barack Obama has said the US will formally recognise a Syrian opposition coalition as the de facto administration of regions under rebel control in a move that further saps the legitimacy of president Bashar al-Assad's rule.

The president's announcement, in an interview with ABC News, comes as Washington attempts to bolster support for rebel groups it regards as acceptable to western interests while attempting to isolate others.

The U.S. on Tuesday formally recognized Syria's main rebel group, paving the way for more U.S. support in pursuing an end to the rule of President Bashar al-Assad.

The announcement by U.S. President Barack Obama in a television interview, ahead of an international conference in support of Syrian rebels on Wednesday in Morocco, puts the administration on foot with European allies who are seeking to leverage a string of recent rebel successes by increasing support to the opposition.

The fourth conference for the “Friends of the Syrian People” was set to open today after the US said the new Syrian opposition coalition is the “sole legitimate representative” of the Syrian people.

The US move, announced by President Barack Obama late last night, follows that of the UK and France and what that will mean for the Syrian opposition should be indicated by the results of the conference, which includes more than a hundred delegates from Europe and the Gulf countries in the Moroccan city of Marrakech.

Syrian forces have fired Scud missiles at rebel groups in the northern part of the country over the last few days, according to senior U.S. officials.

The use of the missiles marks a potentially significant expansion of the civil war, which has already killed more than 40,000 people. It comes as the Syrian rebels have been gaining momentum in their fight to oust Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his regime.

The Syrian military is using incendiary bombs in densely populated civilian areas, Human Rights Watch alleged in a report released Wednesday.

US officials said the regime had used the weapons to target “rebels hiding in playgrounds”.

British officals said intelligence reports indicated that the regime first fired a Scud missile on Monday and the firing has continued.

Russia Criticizes U.S. Recognition of Syrian Opposition

روسيا تنتقد الولايات المتحدة لاعترافها بالمعارضة السورية

MOSCOW—Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Wednesday criticized President Obama's formal recognition of the Syrian opposition.

Lavrov, who has been leading Russia's push to bring President Bashar al-Assad's regime and the rebel opposition to the negotiating table, said that the U.S. recognition "contradicts the Geneva Communique" to move such a "common dialogue" forward.

The Syrian opposition called for "real support" and not just recognition on Wednesday, hours after the U.S. declared its new coalition was the "legitimate representative" of its country's people.

Speaking as the fourth meeting of the "Friends of the Syrian People" opened in the Moroccan city of Marrakech, opposition spokesman Walid al-Bunni called on the more than a hundred delegates from Europe and the Gulf countries to provide something concrete to help in their nearly two-year battle against Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime.
