US and Russia back bid to find end to Syrian war

الولايات المتحدة وروسيا يعيدون محاولة إيجاد نهاية للحرب في سوريا

Lakhdar Brahimi, the United nations special envoy to Syria, is reportedly planning to fly from Cairo to Damascus to present a deal to the Syrian president.

The plan would create a transitional government made up of regime and opposition figures, according to diplomatic sources.

Rebels threaten to storm 2 Syrian Christian towns

Rebels have threatened to storm two predominantly Christian towns in central Syria, saying regime forces are using them to attack nearby areas, an activist group said Saturday. It says such an attack could force thousands of Christians from their homes.

Russia's foreign minister, meanwhile, said that Damascus has consolidated its chemical weapons into one or two locations to protect them from a rebel onslaught.

Russia: Syria consolidates its chemical weapons

Syria has consolidated its chemical weapons into one of two locations from its usual places scattered across the country, Russia's foreign minister said Saturday.

The move comes as unrest in the country extends to nearly two years, with rebels making gains recently.

Pro-government TV cameraman slain in Syria

BEIRUT -- A Syrian state television cameraman was slain outside his home in Damascus, the Syrian Arab News Agency reported Saturday.

Haidar Smoudi was the ninth state-employed journalist killed by "armed terrorist groups," the news agency said. The Syrian government and its agencies commonly refer to rebels seeking to overthrow President Bashar Assad as "terrorists."
