Envoy warns that 100,000 could die in Syria in 2013

The international envoy to Syria has warned that as many as 100,000 could die in the next year if a way cannot be found to end the country's civil war quickly. Lakhdar Brahimi, the UN-Arab League envoy for the Syrian crisis, told reporters in Cairo that if the crisis continues, Syria will not be divided into states "like what happened in Yugoslavia" but will face "Somalisation, which means warlords, and the Syrian people will be persecuted by those who control their fate".

ANTAKYA, Turkey — As many as 400 people were killed in Syria on Saturday in the deadliest single day since the civil war began almost two years ago, according to opposition group reports that government troops carried out a mass killing of civilians at a petrochemical university.

Amid the escalating violence, international peace mediator Lakhdar Brahimipredicted that if the conflict continues at its current pace, the death toll of 44,000 in the 21-month-old uprising could more than double.

British public wants to 'keep out of Syria'

While David Cameron is rallying support among EU leaders to send arms to the rebels opposing the Assad regime in Syria, he also faces a battle to persuade the British public to back the plan. According to a survey for The Independent, people do not believe Britain should provide military supplies to the rebels.

Middle East: don't rely on the past to predict its future

Recent reports from inside Syria paint a grim picture on both sides. In Aleppo, as my Guardian colleague Ghaith Abdul-Ahad described in a vivid report last week, the armed opposition to President Bashar al-Assad remains as split as ever, looting is commonplace and rivalries are multiplying. In Damascus, the situation for Assad and his inner circle continues to deteriorate. The president himself, suggest some accounts, is "isolated and fearful", almost invisible and unwilling to venture outside. The operational capacity of the forces closest to him to mount operations is also declining even as Russia seems to be moving to distance itself from Assad, if not from Syria itself.

Syria War Breathes New Life into Global Jihad

Many felt that the death of Osama bin Laden, Anwar al-Awlaki and numerous other key members of the al-Qa'ida leadership had stemmed the tide of the movement and the global jihad. But as terrorism issues appear to be slipping down the hierarchy of perceived risks in much of the Western world, the trends that are emerging from the Syrian conflict remind us that al-Qa'ida is in this campaign for the long term.

The UN’s farce in Syria

hen Kofi Annan went to Syria in July to negotiate “peace” with Bashar Assad, it was a farce. Immediately after Annan left, Assad resumed slaughtering the Syrian people en masse. Annan soon resigned as UN Special Envoy, declaring that peace with Assad was impossible.Since that visit, Assad has ordered his thugs to use SCUD missiles, cluster bombs, and other terrorist tools to kill civilians and stave off the fall of his regime. Assad clearly has no desire for peace or negotiation.

Syria is many conflicts rolled into one. It is also at the centre of two regional struggles

Shame on you! Shame on The Independent!" boomed the voice of a Syrian intellectual in my phone half an hour after I had returned from Damascus to Beirut. He was so incoherent in his rage that it was difficult to know his precise objections, but my sin seemed to be that I had been in Damascus, talked to members of the Syrian government and concluded that it was not going to collapse any time soon.

Russia's foreign minister said Saturday that Syrian President Bashar Assad has no intention of stepping down and it would be impossible to try to persuade him otherwise. After a meeting with Lakhdar Brahimi, the U.N.'s envoy for the Syrian crisis, Lavrov also said that the Syrian opposition risks sacrificing many more lives if it continues to insist on Assad leaving office as a precondition for holding talks on Syria's future.
