Syria’s descent into hell

سوريا الانزلاق إلى الجحيم

As 2012 draws to a close, Syria is descending into hell. At least 40,000 people, and likely many more, have been killed, while millions have been forced to flee their homes. Over the past 12 months, Bashar al-Assad has steadily unleashed ever-greater military firepower in response to what began as peaceful protests by the Syrian people. Starting with tanks and heavy artillery in February, the Syrian regime escalated over the summer to using attack helicopters and fighter jets. In recent weeks, it has begun firing Scud missiles at its own population.

After a week of attempting to craft a peace plan that both President Bashar al-Assad and the Syrian opposition would agree to, the United Nations' envoy to Syria said the situation will not stabilize on its own and that a political deal is no closer.

“People are talking about a divided Syria being split into a number of small states like Yugoslavia,” Lakhdar Brahimi said, according to The New York Times. “This is not what is going to happen. What will happen is Somalization – warlords."

More than 120 journalists and media workers have been killed so far in 2012, with the conflict in Syria making it one of the bloodiest in recent years.

The International Federation of Journalists said there has been a total of 121 deaths among media personnel from targeted killings, bomb attacks and cross-fire incidents in 2012.

Syria rebels clash with state forces, reportedly attack pipeline

s a devastating year in Syria drew to a close, armed rebels and government forces continued to battle over the bloodied country, state media and opposition activists reported Monday.

Government forces have seized weapons and killed and arrested “a number of terrorists” in the province of Homs, the official Syrian Arab News Agency reported, using its usual term for the armed rebels. State media also carried a military statement claiming that army units had killed “huge numbers of terrorists” in the Damascus countryside and the areas surrounding the Aleppo airport, stressing “its resolve to continue cracking down on the terrorists.”
