The number of Syrian refugees reaches one million on Wednesday, according to the United Nations' refugee agency. Numbers of Syrians fleeing President Bashar al-Assad's forces from the country continue to rise week-on-week and 'the international community has not woken up to the seriousness of this crisis', according to a worker from the agency. Countries including Lebanon and Jordan are struggling to cope as refugees arrive in increasing numbers

Britain is to step up assistance to Syria's opposition, the foreign secretary, William Hague, has said on Wednesday , providing armoured vehicles, body armour and other non-lethal equipment to the "moderate, democratic forces" battling President Bashar al-Assad.

A 20-strong United Nations observer mission has been captured by Syrian rebels on the country's border with Israel. In a video posted on Youtube, a young man saying he was from the "Martyrs of Yarmouk" brigade said the convoy would not be released until forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad withdrew from the village of Jamla, a mile east of the ceasefire line with the Israeli-occupied Golan.
