الاتحاد الأوروبي يريد من سوريا الابتعاد

عن الانتخابات الرئاسية في لبنان

بيروت – طالب منسق العلاقات الخارجية في الاتحاد الأوروبي خافيير سولانا من سوريا البقاء بعيداً عن الانتخابات الرئاسية القادمة في لبنان.

سولانا الذي قام بزيارة إلى بيروت استمرت عدة ساعات أخبر الصحفيين في بيروت بأن على سوريا أن تقدم المساعدة للبنان و ان تتركها تقوم بعملها, "وان على القادة السوريين أن يفهموا ذلك جيداً".   

وأضاف:"بالنسبة للاتحاد الأوروبي, فان مصلحتنا بان ينتخب الشعب اللبناني الرئيس الذي يريدونه, و لكننا نريد أن يتم ذلك عن طريق الدستور".

وقد عقد سولانا مباحثات مع رئيس الوزراء فؤاد السنيورة إضافة إلى رئيس مجلس النواب نبيه بري و البطريرك الماروني نصرالله صفير.

وقد قال سولانا خلال مؤتمر صحفي في مطار بيروت :"لقد أصبح لدي انطباع جيد حول تقدم الوضع في لبنان".

و يتوجب على البرلمان اللبناني أن ينتخب رئيساً ليحل مكان لحود هذا الشهر, وكان قد مدد للرئيس لحود فترته الرئاسية الماضية إبان الهيمنة السورية على لبنان عن طريق تعديل في الدستور اللبناني.

وهناك خلافات عميقة بين الأحزاب والجماعات اللبنانية المختلفة حول موضوع الرئاسة.

الحكومة و مؤيدوها من المسيحيين و الدروز و السنة يريدون أن يكون الرئيس القادم مستقلاً عن التأثير السوري.

و لكن المعارضة تريد رئيساً مناصراً لحزب الله المتطرف كما أنها تريد منع وصول رئيس موال للولايات المتحدة و أوروبا.  

وقد كانت سوريا مسيطرة على لبنان حتى اتهمت دمشق بالتورط في اغتيال رئيس الوزراء السابق رفيق الحريري, ولكن سوريا ترفض هذه التهمة.  

وتتعرض لبنان  حالياً لأسوأ أزمة سياسية منذ الحرب الأهلية وذلك بعد أن قام ستة وزراء موالون لسوريا بالاستقالة من حكومة السنيورة في نوفمبر عام 2006, حيث أدى ذلك إلى شل الحكومة و اتخاذ القرارات السياسية بشكل عملي.

 presidential elections in Lebanon

Beirut - European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana called Tuesday on Syria to stay away from Lebanon 's upcoming presidential elections.

Solana, who visited Lebanon for a few hours, told reporters in Beirut Syria must help Lebanon and 'let Lebanon do its job, and I think that the leaders of Syria must understand that.'

'For the European Union, our interest is that the Lebanese people elect the president they wish, but we would like (it) to be done within the mandate of the constitution,' he said.

Solana held talks with Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Seniora as well as Parliamentary Speaker Nabih Berri and Maronite Christian Patriarch Nasrallah Sfeir.

'I had a very good impression about how the situation in Lebanon is evolving,' Solana said during a press conference at Beirut airport.

The Lebanese parliament has from September 25 to November 24 to elect a president to replace Emile Lahoud, whose term in office was controversially extended by three years under a Syrian-inspired constitutional amendment in 2004.

Solana arrived in Lebanon on Tuesday from Jordan , and left for Egypt on the final stage of a regional tour which was aimed at preparing the ground for a Middle East peace conference called by the United States for later in the year.

Lebanon 's political factions are currently locked in deep differences over the issue of the presidency.

The government - and its Christian, Druze and Sunni supporters - want the next president to be independent of Syrian influence.

The opposition wants a supporter of the radical Hezbollah movement's 'armed resistance' and wants to prevent the government from installing a president aligned with the United States and Europe .

Syria was Lebanon 's powerbroker until Damascus was accused of the assassination of former premier Rafik Hariri in 2005, a charge it denies.

Lebanon has been hit by its worst political crisis since the civil war after six pro-Syrian ministers resigned from Seniora's cabinet in November 2006, effectively paralysing the government and political decision-making.
